Brűlé Celebrates 120 Years

Issue 2, March 7, 2003
120
years ago, a group of anglers from Canada and the United States hired out Clarence Burton and James McWhirter to hire men and get the Little Cascapedia prepared for their arrival to fish for Atlantic salmon and sea trout. As early as 1878 there was an interest in setting up a salmon fishing club on the Little Cascapedia. However it was not until 1883 that these plans were enacted and the beginnings of three lodges built along the river for the purpose of housing members of a club.

Originally the camps consisted of log walls with canvas tops. By 1890 the club had received complete leasing control of the Little Cascapedia from the Queen’s representatives in Canada and a more permanent construction of the lodges began. The original club became defunct in 1930 and the second club took over. The lease ended in 1945 although there was still a good chunk of water owned by the last club member, Harry F. Maclean. This eventually formed the nucleus of what is now Camp Brűlé. Check out the website for a more detailed history of the lodge and photos.
Boston Mills Press Releases ‘Classic Fishing Lodges of Canada’

Boston Mills Press has announced that a coffee table picture book of Canada’s classic fishing lodges will go ahead and is currently in the editorial process. Among 16 lodges, including lodges from the Miramichi and Restigouche rivers, Camp Brűlé will be included in the publication. The main goal was to ensure that some form of documentation of the Camp’s endeavours existed. The chapter on Brűlé includes a history and many photos. We’ll let you know when its available for purchase.
2002 Season shows promise for 2003 season on Gaspé Rivers.

W
ide reports of increased runs have been supported by ASF Winter Journal. The Bonaventure river reported around 2600 grilse and salmon, the Grande Cascapedia reported around 1400 grilse and salmon and the Petite Cascapedia was near 600 grilse and salmon. We believe that many of these counts may be low, as so many fish only came in after the counts in September.

On all three rivers, high grilse counts were made, leading to suggestions that the 2003 season could see an increase in number of 2 year MSW (multi-sea wintering) salmon. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Greenland Fishery Opts In to Conservation

The ASF has reported that Greenland will suspend all commercial fisheries, leaving only a small subsistence fishery for Atlantic salmon. This will help to bolster flagging North Atlantic stocks, including those around the Gaspé coast, by allowing as many as 20,000 salmon to make their migration into rivers around the North Atlantic.

If you don’t have an ASF membership, you can call (800) 565-5666, or check out there website at www.asf.ca Camp Brűlé has been supporting the ASF for many years through the donation of trips to their annual dinners and annual raffle. Congratulations to Mr. Murray Bring of New York for winning this year’s raffle trip to Brűlé. Also, this year, two trips will be auctioned off at the Toronto and Chicago dinners. The Toronto dinner is scheduled for April 2nd, 2003 at the Royal York Hotel and the Chicago dinner is scheduled for May 1st, 2003 at the Racquet Club. We would like to thank the staff at the ASF for their time and efforts.
